"Friendly way to cruise the Bay"

Sunday, July 25th to Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Another successful Georgian Bay Regatta has come to an end.  Thanks to the Georgian Bay Sailing Association (GBSA) Executive and the volunteers that comprised the Georgian Bay Regatta Organizing Committee for 2010, this year's event was acclaimed by many of the participants as one of most enjoyable regattas in the 25-year history of the GBR.  I wish to thank all of the volunteer members of the various committees that assisted in the historical research, fundraising, sponsorship and advertising campaign, port coordination, boat registration and the social activity planning for their continued efforts and time over the past months to make the 2010 Georgian Bay Regatta such a memorable one.

For those of you in attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the GBSA held in Thornbury on Saturday, July 31st, you will already be aware of the changes being made to the GBSA Executive and the 2011 GBR Organizing Committee.  The GBSA Board of Directors will continue with the same team members as in 2010, with the exception of the GBSA President.  Paul Woodhouse is stepping down after four years of hard work and success in this position and I will be assuming the role of President of the GBSA.  I only hope that I can contribute as much to the continued success of the GBSA and the annual GBR as Paul has done over the past few years.  The present list of GBSA Directors will remain for another year.  This includes Patti Duggan (Treasurer), Tom Bolland, Alberto Zanchetta, Terry Bell, Ron Owston and Ewan Campbell.

Tom Bolland will continue as Co-Chair for the 2011 GBR and Ron Owston (Skipper of Shannon 1) will join him as the other Co-Chair for next year's regatta.  Continuing on as part of the GBR Organizing Committee will be Terry White, George Will, Al Woolnough, John Gyles and Ken Forsyth.

We will commence the planning meetings for next year in September and will keep you posted with all of the breaking news and the intended schedule for the 2011 GBR as it becomes available.  Thank you to all of the skippers and crew members that participated in this year's Georgian Bay Regatta and hope to see you all back next July for another fun-filled and exciting event.

The main activity for a number of years has been to organize the annual Georgian Bay Regatta.  The Georgian Bay Regatta (GBR) has been running on the beautiful waters of Georgian Bay for 25 years!  With a unique agenda every year, the goals of the Regatta are multifocal:
  • Race and cruise to different areas of the Bay in the company and safety of a fleet.
  • Enjoy the camaraderie of racing competition for sailors and the peaceful exploration of new cruising grounds.
  • Support safe boating and youth sailing around Georgian Bay.
The fleet has always had a recreational tone and despite many days of fierce competition on the race course, the afternoon and evenings are always pleasant social occasions.  We invite you to come and experience the beauty of Georgian Bay with sailors and boaters who really love to share their experiences and welcome new friends.
