CANSail Community Instructor

The CANSail Community Instructor Training Clinic is designed to provide training to sailors who are not eligible to become CANSail 1&2 instructors. The CANSail Community Instructor Training Clinic is suitable for:

  • Program leaders in small communities
  • Counselors at multi-sport camps
  • Instructors in Training

Community instructor candidates may not have a high level of technical sailing knowledge, but they are passionate about sailing and eager to develop their sailing and instructing skills. Successful completion of this course will prepare Community Instructors to better serve the sailors they will be working with. During this course, participants will have an opportunity to improve their personal sailing skills and on-water instructing skills including safe use of a coach boat.

The Ontario Sailing Community Instructor Clinic is offered in conjunction with a Coach Boat Safety course. Successful participants will gain the CANSail Community Instructor Certification. The Coach Boat Safety course also includes online modules that are completed prior to the on-water session. Should participants also successfully complete the online modules, they will also gain their Coach Boat Safety Certification.

Prerequisites

  • CANSail Fundamental Course (optional)
  • Coach Boat Safety Course (optional)
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card
  • Intermediate/Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • Safe Sport Training
  • Make Ethical Decisions
  • Enhanced Police Information Check if Age 18+ (send to programs@sailing.ca)

Note: This course is not a prerequisite for the CANSail 1&2, 3&4, or 5&6 instructor levels and should not be taken in place of a CANSail Technical Clinic for those levels.

Clinic Outcomes and Certification Ability

Outcome 1: iCANSail

Instructors who are successful at the CANSail Community Instructor Clinic but have not completed the CANSail Fundamental and Coach Boat Safety courses can certify the iCANSail level.

Outcome 2: CANSail 1

Instructors who are successful at the CANSail Community Instructor Clinic and have completed the CANSail Fundamental and Coach Boat Safety courses can certify the iCANSail and CANSail 1 levels.
