Celebrating the 60th Year of the Shark!
2019 Homecomers Regatta in partnership with the Canadian Shark Class Association is excited to celebrate the 60th Year of the Shark on September 21 and 22 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club.
The Shark was designed in 1959 by George Hinterhoeller, then a 31-year-old Austrian émigré and Boatwright living in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Having grown up sailing light displacement fin-keeled boats in his native Austria, he wanted “a boat that would go like hell when the wind blew”.
Sharks have been a mainstay of the one-design sailing scene on the Great Lakes for 60 years and the class is as strong today as ever with 9 CSCA sanctioned regattas every season. The 2019 World Championships are in Robel, Germany this October and has 52 registered so far. Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club has been awarded the 2021 Shark World Champions to be held in late August.
Registration for the 60th celebration is open and the planning is well under way for a memorable weekend. Saturday night, crews are requested to “dress-up” in the “era” that their boat was made to spice up the night and add to the fun!! Go to www.shark24.ca for more information.
Take advantage of the discounted entry fee by registering before Tuesday, September 10th. Registration is limited to 60 boats!
