Eight Bells for Ross Cameron

Statements from Kingston Yacht Club and Ontario Sailing

“The flag on the yardarm at the Kingston Yacht Club has been lowered in honour of our intrepid member Ross Cameron, who passed away this past weekend. Despite the incredibly blustery wind, slashing rain and crashing waves lowering the flag gave me a moment to reflect on a man I was fortunate to get to know later in life.

“Word of our loss has spread rapidly throughout the Kingston community. Ross’ reach was very broad and his impact significant. Whether it was in the field of education as a teacher and principal in the Limestone District School Board; as a skipper, crew or Race Officer sailing out of the Kingston Yacht Club; or as an active member of the Kingston Choral Society – Ross touched the lives of many. He has been honoured by many organizations including locally as Past Chairman of CORK, being inducted into the Kingston Sports Hall of Fame, as Past Commodore and Life Member at KYC. Many have sent messages to KYC that you can read below.

“I know we all have memories of Ross and his contributions. I hope that we will soon be able to share them with each other. The Cameron Family has been contacted and we intend to respect their desires in terms of honoring our fellow sailor.”

 Robert Crothers, Commodore

“Ross was a friend. He was a consummate supporter of everything sailing, especially youth sailing in the Province of Ontario. He helped shape Ontario Sailing’s Race Management Committee and supported Ontario Sailing in so many ways. Ross was never afraid to speak his piece, but even so, it was always to make things better. We have lost a true sailing friend, partner, support and dedicated volunteer. Ross will be truly missed by everyone that he has gotten to know over his many years at KYC, CORK and Ontario Sailing. Fair winds Ross.”
