OFFICIALS

Race officials play a vital role in the organization and management of sailboat racing in Ontario. Ontario Sailing delivers training for volunteer officials at the club level as part of Sail Canada's Officials Certification Program.

How to Prepare for the Upcoming Season

  1. Register as an Official – All Sail Canada officials who wish to appear on the Sail Canada website and act as an official during the year must complete a free registration via their Sail Canada Profile. Annual registration is open and an official's status will remain active until December 31, 2026. Registration can be completed via your Sail Canada profile by clicking here to log in then scroll down to 'Official Registration' . By Clicking this registration you agree to the Sail Canada Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct documet located on the Sail Canada website here. 

Why You Should Register Annually:

The benefits and reasons for registration are: 

  • Qualifications – by registering, our system verifies that officials are certified, have the appropriate prerequisites, and agree to the Sail Canada code of conduct.  
  • Insurance – as a registered Sail Canada official individuals are covered by the Directors and Officers Insurance Policy. Officials who are not registered are not covered.  
  • Funding – Sail Canada requires registration data as part of our portfolio to secure funding from Sport Canada to continue to support Officials program development.  
  • Opportunity – If you choose "Show as Available" your name will appear on the list of officials on the Sail Canada website. This helps connect you with people and events in which you might participate. 

It is important to note: to appear on the Sail Canada website you must be both (1) registered with valid certifications, and (2) agree to be shown as available.  

  1. Complete Prerequisites– Please ensure that you have the appropriate prerequisites for your officials' certification. All Regional and National officials must complete Safe Sport Training, (required every 5 years) and present a clear background check required every 3 years. 
  1. Check Your Sail Canada Profile– Please ensure that your Sail Canada profile is current. Your email address and phone number are essential modes of communication for Sail Canada and Provincial Associations to keep you up to date with any new information.  

 

Note: if you have unchecked "Show as Available" your name will not appear on the Sail Canada website. Please take a few moments to ensure that your profile is as correct as possible, and if you have any issues, please contact official@sailing.ca.

JUDGES

Sail Canada’s Judge Program has been developed to provide qualified, trained individuals to act as judges and protest committee chairs. To be certified as a Club Judge you must complete a Sail Canada Club Judge Seminar and apply for certification. Ontario Sailing delivers several Sail Canada Club Judge Seminars throughout the year. Once an individual completes the Sail Canada Club Judge Seminar and gains practical experience, they can apply for Club Judge Certification. RACE OFFICERS

Assistant Race Officer (ARO)

An Assistant Race Officer is capable of assisting in the running of a race as a member of the Race Committee. To be certified as an Assistant Race Officer, you must complete a Sail Canada Assistant Race Officer Course. Ontario Sailing delivers several Sail Canada ARO courses throughout the year. 

Club Race Officer (CRO)

A Club Race Officer manages the on the water activities of regattas at the club level. You must also submit an application for certification including a record of practical experience in Race Committee organization. Ontario Sailing delivers several Sail Canada CRO Race Management courses throughout the year. Once an individual completes the Sail Canada CRO Race Management Course and gains practical experience, they can apply for Club Race Officer Certification. MARK LAYERS

Assistant Mark Layer (AML)

An Assistant Mark Layer is capable of assisting a mark layer as a member of the Race Committee. Certification requires successful completion of the Sail Canada Assistant Mark Layer Course. Once an individual completes the Sail Canada Assistant Mark Layer Course and gains practical experience, they can apply for Assistant Mark Layer Certification. Mark Layer (ML)

A Mark Layer is capable of managing the mark laying operations of a regatta as part of the Race Committee. Certification requires successful completion of the Sail Canada Mark Layer course and experience as a Mark Layer at a minimum of 2 provincial or higher-level regattas. Once an individual completes the Sail Canada Mark Layer Course and gains practical experience including 2 provincial or higher-level regattas, they can apply to Sail Canada for Mark Layer Certification.
