Offshore and Coastal Survival Courses
Are you planning to compete in an event that requires either an Offshore Personal Survival Course or Coastal Personal Survival Course? You can get certified through courses offered by Ontario Sailing!
Sailors around the world take personal survival training to prepare themselves and their boats for coastal, offshore and oceanic races and passages.
Many sailing events require some crew to hold a valid certificate from an approved personal survival training course. Check your sailing event’s Notice of Race for event-specific training requirements and recommendations.
OFFSHORE PERSONAL SURVIVAL COURSE (two-day course)
The World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival Course includes both classroom and practical components to prepare participants to effectively handle emergencies on the water. Learn about the equipment you have on your boat and how to use flares, cut your rig, swim in your PFD, fight fires and get in a raft. A portion of the course takes place in a pool where participants swim in sailing gear and lifejacket/PFD and board a raft.
Sail Canada — World Sailing Approved Course
The offshore Personal Survival Course is typically offered between November and March.
COASTAL PERSONAL SURVIVAL COURSE
The Sail Canada Coastal Personal Survival Course is a one-day course that includes both classroom and practical components to prepare participants to effectively handle emergencies. Topics covered during the course include weather, safety gear, overboard recovery, hypothermia and cold water immersion, emergency communications and more.
This is a Sail Canada approved Category 3 sea survival course.
The Coastal Personal Survival Course is typically offered during May, June and September.
